BMKG Monitor Directly the Situation of Children of Mount Krakatau

Rakyat Utama. Head of the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Dwikorita Karnawati will fly to observe the activities of Gunung Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, today Tuesday, December 25, 2018. BMKG will immediately monitor by helicopter with the assistance of TNI Commander Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto.

"We want to make sure the factual conditions in the field are there, because until yesterday we went there again because the ash hit the plane," Dwikorita said in a conversation at Apa Kabar Indonesia Pagi tvOne.

BMKG continued Dwikorita, will continue to monitor the conditions around the Sunda Strait waters after the tsunami that hit the Banten and Lampung regions on Saturday night. It will also continue to coordinate with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) to map potential disasters.

"We have coordinated and anticipated the tsunami not only in the Sunda Strait, Palu and others. We anticipate it, and we add instruments, we prepare it and already there," he said.

The former UGM Chancellor did not deny that the problem of coordination between institutions in detecting disasters still needs to be intensified. Reflect on the tsunami in Banten, where the cause of the tsunami was different from what usually happens, which begins with a tectonic earthquake.

In the Banten tsunami, according to Dwikorita, it occurred because of the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau. Where the domain of monitoring volcanic activity is in PVMBG. While the BMKG instrument is only able to detect tectonic events. While tsunamis in the Sunda Strait occur because of volcanic events.

"Our earthquake sensor in the Sunda Strait is functioning properly, but the sensor detects that there is an earthquake (tectonic), before the tsunami we detected it with the sensor. Well the (tsunami) yesterday was a volcanic earthquake sensor," he said.

Learning from the Banten tsunami case, BMKG, explained Dwikorita, needs to integrate tectonic earthquake sensors with volcanics so that they can detect all potential disasters.

According to him, at this time it is not important to debate whose authority in terms of disaster detection. Both BMKG, PVMBG and BNPB have the same responsibility to provide information to the public to avoid disasters. "This mountain is not (actually) not the BMKG, we work, we don't think about tupoksi."
